The faster you go the more pain you'll endure. But also the better shape you're in the less pain you'll have. For example if I run 8 hard miles on Sunday morning it would be very hard for me to wake up on Monday morning and run another 6 miles. I would be too sore and tired. I can however run well by Monday evening. Then following the same plan, my next workout could be Wednesday morning. I'm getting a bit older and can't do a tough workout every day any more and this method seems to work very well for me.

Goal Setting

Like everyone else I need something to motivate me. For me the best thing is a future race. I register early and start planning for the race. I set distance and times goals for each weekly long run. I study the race web site and visit the course in advance. It is what gets me out the door on a cold Wyoming morning.

Nutrition

One of the many reason I love to run is because I love to eat! Although I'm not a vegetarian, I admire them for many reasons. I feel that their diet is extremely healthy and much better for the environment. Maybe I'll go veg. sometime but I'm not there yet.

Each year I make a few more goals to improve my diet.
A few recent goals are:
1. Eat more lean chicken and less beef
2. Drink more water
3. Increase the variety of the fruits and vegetables that I eat
4. For me they are usually on Tuesday and Saturday. Saturday's run is normally the harder of the two. The other days of the week are lighter, more enjoyable runs or days off. This format allows me to recover sufficiently so that the hard workouts are more effective.
